Maged Shawky was the Executive Chairman of Beltone Financial Holding, a leading investment bank in Egypt and a listed company on the Egyptian Exchange, after spending four years as Vice Chairman and three years as the Chief Executive Officer of the group between 2012 and 2011.
Previously, Maged was the Executive Chairman of the Egyptian Exchange for five years, after one year as deputy chairman (2004-2010). Furthermore, he was the president of the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA) between 2005 and 2009, where he played a role in promoting African markets in Europe and the United States.
Earlier, Maged spent a decade as an advisor to the Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade for capital markets reforms and developments. He was involved in the number of IMF and World Bank economic reform program negotiations’ rounds, structuring and implementation.
On the international level, Maged was a board member in the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), as well as a member of the G20 and OECD Experts Group, which reviewed and proposed recommendations of amendments to the published Principles of Corporate Governance. He also co-authored the first Egyptian Corporate Governance Code.
His experience is further enriched by being a member in several boards and committees, in the banking sector, non-banking financial services, fintech, FMCG, oil & gas and logistics. He also founded and invested in a number of start-ups in Egypt and Europe in several fields.
He authored and co-authored research, policy papers, and articles on market efficiency, monetary policies and transmission channels, corporate governance practices, elevating aggregate demand, widening the middle class and the role of the private sector. Maged has a M.Sc. in Financial Economics from Queen Mary – University of London, UK (1996-1997).
